I am open to PhD supervision on the broad topics of creative approaches to eco-social change, grassroots initiatives for sustainability (including e.g. community growing, citizen science) and repair.

Open positions:

🍄🍄‍🟫 Cultivating fungal literacy in gardens 🍄‍🟫🍄

Would you like to do a PhD research project, on public engagement with fungi, in partnership with the Royal Horticultural Society, and Anglia Ruskin University? Creative, more-than-human approaches very welcome!!

This PhD will investigate how people notice, understand and value garden fungi, and identify effective ways to increase fungal literacy and engagement. Findings will help inform future developments in biodiversity education, public engagement and environmental stewardship, including directly within the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS).

You would be based at the RHS Wisley, in Surrey (UK), working with expert mycologist Jassy Drakulic, on the RHS Plant Health Team. Many possibilities to collaborate with the RHS Engagement and Education teams in their wonderful gardens, exhibitions and learning spaces.

Deadline: 15 November 2026. See CAM-DTP website. Email [email protected] for more info.

Current PhDs

I currently work with my colleague Mel Rohse, and Time and Tide museum staff Jo Jones and Colin Stott to supervise PhD Researcher Sonny Elliott. Sonny works on the project ‘Changing coastal livelihoods: oral histories and lived experiences of transformation in Great Yarmouth’ using Time and Tide’s fantastic oral histories collection the ‘Great Yarmouth Voices’. This project comes from a successful application to the Collections and Communities in the East of England collaborative doctoral programme, which I led. This is a fantastic scheme that also provides collections training to the PhD Researcher.

Visit Time and Tide! It’s an incredible museum.
